Mark O'Reilly MACC: In my work as a biblical counselor, I have walked alongside many who carry deep wounds of shame and pain. Scripture reminds us that human suffering is not new; from the Garden onward, people have sought ways to hide, to cover, and to escape. Numbing and disconnecting are modern expressions of that ancient instinct. They offer temporary relief but keep us from the presence where God meets us. My studies in biblical counseling have shown that coping strategies like dissociation or self‑injury are not signs of weakness but survival responses to overwhelming hurt. Yet survival is not the abundant life Christ invites us into. The call of counseling is to help individuals name these patterns honestly, to see both their appeal and their cost, and to discover the invitation of presence—remaining open before God and others, even when shame presses hard. This paper grows out of that work. It explores the dynamics of numbing and disconnecting, the weight of public shame, and the gentle, biblical invitation to presence as the pathway toward healing and wholeness.
